  • Because of zeolites unique ion exchange and sorption properties they are widely used in wastewater treatment processes for removing cations. This includes nitrogenous, phosphoric & organic compounds, heavy metals (Pb, Zn, As, Cd, Cr, Ni & Hg) and dyes, which if left untreated can create significant environmental impacts and dangers to human health.


  • Zeolite removal efficiency depends on the contaminant to be removed and can reach up to 96% for heavy metals, 90% for phosphoric compounds, 96% for dyes, 80% for nitrogen compounds (96% for ammonium), and 89% for organics.

  • Due to its high pore density zeolite has a highly effective surface area that can capture high concentrations of contaminants including ammonium (up to 97%), heavy metals and organic compounds. It can be used as a secondary filtration unit after biological purification and/or aeration or as filter medium for the removal of solid and suspended particles and removal of unwanted ions (Fe, Mg, Ca & PO43-) at the same time. By removal of Ca and Mg ions hardness of water is temporary or permanently reduced.

Mining Wastewater Decontamination

  • Ability to remove toxic compounds and heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn, Cs, Cr, Ni & Hg) concentrations from mining effluent that otherwise would be a major environmental risk through groundwater contamination.


  • Because of its absorption properties zeolite is used to remove ammonium from mining effluents. If left untreated ammonium oxidises to water soluble nitrites and nitrates enter the ecosystem and create algal blooms in waterways and lakes, along with health risks due to increased nitrite levels within the human body.
